Welcome to James Clemens Boys' Basketball,

I am excited and honored to have been selected to lead the program and look forward to getting the ball rolling in our second season. I realize that there is still a lot of work ahead because this program is going to have to be built from the ground up, brick by brick; but I am optimistic that there are great things ahead for the boys' basketball program at James Clemens High School.

I have been blessed to have been coaching for over 23 years. I have a strong passion for the game of basketball as well as helping student athletes learn the fundamentals of basketball. It will take the coaches, players, parents, administration, and the community working together to take our program to the level of success where we ultimately want to be. We expect our student athletes to be committed, respectful, hard-working, disciplined, and young men of character. We want people to know that there is a  high standard of excellence at James Clemens. We will strive to compete on the court, succeed in the classroom, and carry ourselves in a positive manner throughout the community. We are building this program one day at a time. Remember that the tradition starts today!

Athletic Philosophy: At JCHS, we understand and appreciate the importance of athletics in the overall education of our student-athletes. Participation in athletics teaches values such as hard work, commitment, leadership, discipline, teamwork and physical fitness within a framework of academic excellence. Participation also contributes to the physical, emotional and social health of our students, along with promoting a sense of school pride.

Winning is a natural goal and is emphasized on the varsity levels - but never at the expense of healthy attitudes, values and individuals. At sub-varsity levels, winning remains a goal but is subordinate to skill development and participation. Above all, we want all of our athletes to have a rewarding and enjoyable experience while attending James Clemens High School.

Athletic Eligibility: A 10th, 11th or 12th grade student must have passed a minimum of six units of work (including any four core courses) with a composite average of 70 for those six units during the preceding two semesters of attendance. Any four core courses must be included in the six passed and averaged.

A maximum of two units (subjects) may be earned in an accredited summer school and/or Credit Recovery.

All students must be taking six units of work (ones not previously passed) during the current year (seniors on track for graduation fall under different guidelines).

An 8th or 9th grade student must have passed a minimum of five new subjects with a composite average of 70 and must have been promoted to the next grade.

Eligibility verification requirements: Must have the following items on file in the principal’s office:

Copy of certified birth certificate

Current physical exam form signed by a doctor (M.D. or D.O)

Concussion information form signed by student-athlete and parent

•Athletic Insurance form

Cut Policy: One of the most difficult and unpleasant tasks of coaching is making “cuts.” Before you try out for any program at JCHS, be prepared to accept the fact that you may not make the squad. No one enjoys informing any student that he has not made the team, but in many instances, it is necessary to reduce the number of participants to a manageable number. All roster decisions made by the coaching staff are final. No candidate, including a senior, is guaranteed a spot on a team.

Playing Time: Playing time on all levels is based upon:

1.       Performance at practice sessions.

Athletes with questions regarding playing time should address them to Coach Tiggs with the understanding that there is no playing time guarantee on any level.

Transportation: Programs within the JCHS athletic framework have adequate access to transportation to away contests. Under no circumstances will a student be permitted to ride with another student to a contest.

NCAA and Collegiate Eligibility: Athletes may wish to participate on the collegiate level after high school. In order to be eligible, student athletes must enroll online at the NCAA Eligibility Center – http://web1.ncaa.org/ECWR2/NCAA_EMS/NCAA.jsp

NCAA has very strict academic requirements for participation that are centered around the core course GPA and SAT/ACT scores. http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/public/NCAA/Eligibility/index.html

Communication of Athletic Concerns: Positive and respectful communication between parents, athletes, coaches and administrators ultimately benefits the student-athlete. Involvement in athletics will allow your student to experience some of the most rewarding times of their lives. However, there will likely be times when things do not go their way or they disagree with a coach or staff. It is important that the parent realize that these situations are as much a part of the learning process as are the good times. The JCHS coaching staff works hard to ensure the success of every athlete in our programs and we ask that you respect their position on issues within the team. We strongly encourage the athlete and not the parents to talk with the coaches regarding any team issues during the season. This is not only the most direct and productive means of communication, but also a valuable method of teaching responsibility. We realize that situations may arise in which you as a parent deem it necessary to raise a concern and we ask that you adhere to the following guidelines.

Appropriate concerns: treatment of your child, ways you can help your child and your child’s behavior.

Issues not appropriate to discuss: playing time, team strategy, other athletes and play calling.

Protocol for registering concerns: Contact the coach first, if the meeting does not provide a resolution – please contact the athletic director, Eric Terrell @ 256-216-5313.

Do not attempt to confront a coach before or after a game. These can be emotional times for both parties; meetings of this nature do not promote resolution.

Congratulations to our final basketball roster this year. Please come out and support these student/athletes this season.
